Before you start
Install Piye and open it. When it asks, choose Write code.
1. Open a project (1 minute)
On the start screen, Open folder (CmdO) or Clone from GitHub. If the folder came from outside Piye, a card asks Trust this folder?: trust it if you know where it's from, so its tools (type check, lint, language server, Git) can run.
2. Set up the AI (1 minute)
Pick one:
- Sign in to use Piye's agent on Piye credits (Starter includes 750 free credits when you claim them, and again every 6 months).
- Add your own API key in Settings, AI, Personal API keys (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI or Mistral).
- Use a local model with Ollama: Settings, AI, Local Ollama.
3. Find your way around (2 minutes)
- CmdP opens any file; CmdShiftP runs any command.
- Ctrl` shows the terminal. Try Piye style: each command is a card, with suggestions from your project under the input.
- CmdShiftA shows the Code agent; CmdL starts a new chat.
See The window for the full tour.
4. Ask, then build (4 minutes)
In the agent's chat:
- Switch to Ask and ask "How is this project put together, and where should I start?" Ask reads the project (and anything else it needs) and changes nothing.
- Switch to Build and give it a real task: "Add input validation to the signup route and a test for it."
- Watch it work: it reads, edits, runs the tests, and reports what it did. Add a correction while it works by typing; it reads it at its next step.
5. Review and commit (2 minutes)
- Each changed file shows as a card with its diff. In Review mode (the default), Accept or Reject each one; every card keeps an Undo.
- Open Source Control (CtrlShiftG), write a message, and commit (CmdEnter).
Prefer the agent to apply changes as they land? Switch to Auto: pushes, deploys and anything dangerous still ask.
