Piye

Download and install

Piye runs on Mac (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux (.deb and .rpm). Windows is coming along with Arcade. Here is how to install it and what happens the first time it opens.

What's available

Download Piye from piye.dev/download. The page shows the builds the newest version has, with your own computer's build first.

Note

Piye is one app. Visual, Code and Piye Studio are all in the same download, and there is nothing else to install to start.

Install on a Mac

  1. Download the .zip for your Mac. Not sure which chip you have? Open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and look at Chip: "Apple M1" or later is Apple silicon, "Intel" is Intel.
  2. Open the .zip. Your Mac unzips it into Piye.
  3. Drag Piye into your Applications folder.
  4. Open Piye from Applications or Launchpad.

Piye is signed and notarized by Apple, so your Mac opens it without warnings. It keeps itself up to date from then on: see Updates.

Install on Linux

Debian and Ubuntu: download the .deb, then open it with your software installer, or install it from a terminal:

bash
sudo apt install ./piye_amd64.deb

Fedora and RHEL: download the .rpm, then install it:

bash
sudo dnf install ./piye.x86_64.rpm

Piye then appears in your applications menu. (Your file's name may include the version number; use the name of the file you downloaded.)

Tip

On Linux, Piye keeps your sign-in and API keys in the system keyring (GNOME Keyring or KWallet). If your computer has no keyring, Piye keeps them in a file only your user can read, and says so in Settings, under Privacy & Security.

Windows

Windows is coming along with Arcade: they launch together. The download page will offer it as soon as the first Windows build is out.

The first time Piye opens

A small card asks how you want to start:

Welcome to Piye: Build visually or Write code
The first-launch card.
  • Build visually opens Visual: describe an idea and Piye builds it.
  • Write code opens Code: open a folder, clone a repository or start a project.

This only decides where you land. Both sides are always one click away, at the top of the window. To see the card again, open the command palette and run Piye: Choose Visual or Code. To choose where Piye opens every time, use Settings, General, Start in.

Then sign in, so Piye's AI is ready to use. See Sign in and your account.

What Piye sets up for you

You don't need to install developer tools before you start. When a project needs something, Piye gets it:

  • Node.js and package tools for web projects.
  • Language support for the languages you open in Code (see Languages).
  • Tools for phone apps: Piye guides you through the iPhone simulator (which needs Apple's Xcode, from the Mac App Store) and sets up the Android emulator. See Phones on your computer.
  • Publishing tools for the hosts and stores you publish to.

Downloads Piye makes are pinned to known versions and checked before use.

Note

Building phone apps, simulators and some tools take disk space. Settings, Free up space shows what Piye downloaded and lets you remove what you no longer need.

Remove Piye

  • Mac: quit Piye and drag it from Applications to the Bin.
  • Linux: remove the piye package with your package manager (for example sudo apt remove piye or sudo dnf remove piye).

Your projects stay where they are: they are your folders, not Piye's.
